The third day of the Western Earthquake Support phase 2, has ended successfully. This morning we started shopping. Since entering the second phase, cracks and bumps in the road have been repaired at a rapid pace, and the condition has improved considerably. Perhaps as a result of this, the supermarkets near our accommodations have expanded their selection. Last night, after driving for three and a half hours and returning to the hotel, we had a meeting to change the menu. Actually, we had already finished shopping because we were planning to make the curry that was popular in the first batch again, but in a conversation with a person who was evacuated, I heard someone say, “I was given a retort curry for lunch today, and I ate it” The Chinese cabbage and shiitake mushrooms looked like they would be spoiled with the pork ingredients we had bought and the vegetables, so we decided to add a seafood mix to make Happo-choy.

What to do with the protein source that was the most difficult to obtain. Since there was a lot of beef at the nearby supermarket, it looks like we can make gyudon. Our spirit were lost when it turned out that it was already crowded well before the usual traffic jam point. However, driver Kato tried one loophole and it was a huge success! Arrived at Suzu City in 3 hours. Since I had some free time, we went to the gymnasium where relief supplies were being stored. Although supplies have been gathered, there seems to be little that is truly needed. Baby diapers and wipes are in excess stock. There was an overwhelming shortage of sanitary products for women. Furthermore, on the first day of the first wave, we heard that the road to the evacuation center we were aiming for had opened, so we decided to visit there as well, so we headed from the south side of the peninsula to the north side. The tunnel on the main north-south road has collapsed, and about seven roads, including one that only locals know about, are all closed and we had no choice but to give up.

The farm road, which is about 15 kilometers long, is a mountain road that has been made just for cars. What we saw after crossing the mountain was a terrifying sight of the epicenter of the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7. The small hills visible on three sides, which would have been a tranquil landscape, have all collapsed and only the mountain surface can be seen, and houses have been crushed by fallen trees or destroyed by earthquakes. It may sound unpleasant to say, but even those of us who had become accustomed to seeing such houses were shocked once again. There are about 150 evacuees at the destination evacuation center. Fortunately, we were told that food assistance had arrived, so we handed over the blue sheets of relief supplies and returned to the soup kitchen base.

The reality is that nothing has changed yet. Even if you lose your home or are able to evacuate at home, there is no running water, and you are worried that the word “recovery” will seem like a waste of time. We run a soup kitchen every day with the hope of providing some support to those affected by the disaster by providing hot meals. We also receive comments from customers saying that they are looking forward to being able to eat at a fixed time.

The second day of the Western Earthquake support phase 2, has ended. Today, the staff who joined us late arrived in Ishikawa on the first Shinkansen bound for Kanazawa, and #ToyotaMobilityTokyo provided us with a rental car for transportation. Currently, most of the rental cars and snow tires in Hokuriku have been sold out due to support activities, but thanks to your help, we were able to get to the site. As expected from a representative company in Japan, the size of its network and the speed of its information, I can only express my gratitude for the great support it has given me in terms of the speed and passion with which we accomplished our work! They have also provided us with the Hiace from the third round of support activities, and we are very grateful for this, as the cost of renting a vehicle is quite an expense when it comes to long-term support activities.

Also, after seeing the first post, a friend of mine read about the problem of cardboard being easily ruined by rain and snow, and asked if we could try something like this, so he donated 10 folding containers. It quickly became a very popular item for food and other utensils. For lunch, we decided to change things up and have Shiratama Zenzai (mochi). Peace Shokudo had received Zenzai from Toyo Foods Co., Ltd., but there was enough for everyone at the evacuation center, so we provided it to them. Although the evacuation center received an increase in aid items such as sweets that were not part of the first wave, the zenzai was more popular than we expected. As the number of people fluctuating due to the switch to secondary evacuation and home evacuation, we decided to provide dinner in the form of an easy-to-carry lunch box.

After deciding on chicken teriyaki style for the menu, we couldn’t find enough thighs to go shopping, so when we found some chicken wings, all the staff members said, “This is great!” and arranged the numbers. Cut the thigh meat by counting backwards from the number of pieces you want to make, then season and cook at a low temperature. In the meantime, we made the special teriyaki sauce. The key is to use starch syrup and zaramame to add shine and richness to the flavor. Since boiled chicken soup is a waste, Katsuhiko Aoyama, who has experience running a cafe, asked me, “Why not add ginger to the soup?” We came up with a clever idea and ended up having a meal with soup. On the platter, evacuee children said, “I want to help!” and we were surrounded by little chefs who carefully disinfected their hands as I worked on plating the food. The children completed all 100 meals. If the food is plated, it will be time for the food to be served, so the children will be late in eating their own meals. Thank you all for your help.

Jan. 17th Wed.

The first phase of the Western Earthquake support, which was started jointly with AAR Japan has ended.

We left Tokyo at 9 A.M. the day before, passed the Kanetsu, Joshinetsu and Notes Expressway and arrived safely at the evacuation center in Suzu City at 7:15 A.M. It was a long drive with four of us taking turns.

In addition to Kato and Aoyama’s regular members, the members this time were Katsuhiko Aoyama, who helps out at Peace Shokudo, and who met as a volunteer at the Peace Project and Kumamoto Earthquake, and after several years, became an Ingram member. This is Yuki Uchino (Yazawa will be joining us a little later).

The temperature was -6 degrees when we arrived! ! When I was preparing the soup kitchen in the morning, I often heard questions like, “Oh, are you restarting today?”, “What time should I come?”, “What can I eat today?”, and “I’m happy because I had cup noodles the whole time you were gone” Today we had warm “kitsune udon” for lunch, and “pork soup and rice” for dinner.

Although the number of people evacuating to evacuation centers has decreased since the second evacuation period began, there were people in the neighborhood who were evacuated to their homes who needed food and blue sheets to repair their homes, so they could buy them. We loaded and delivered the necessary supplies. As usual, when udon noodles are served, there was a line forming, which clearly shows that people are looking forward to the service. When we hear someone say, “I feel better when I eat something warm,” or “Peace’s food is always delicious,” no matter how busy or sleepy I am, we feel rewarded.

Thank you all for your support.

Jan. 14th Sat.

The 39th Peace Project was a huge success. The menu was stewed hamburger with mixed vegetables, broccoli and rape blossoms. At the end, we were able to provide all 100 meals and 24 meals to the facilities for people with disabilities.

For kickboxing experience, we had Takamasa Abiko and Jumpei Kimura. Thank you so much for both of your help. We also got vegetables from the Adachi Children’s cafeteria support council, snacks from Miyo-san and Hayasaka-san, bananas from Dole-sama, and stollen from Ponpadolle-sama. Thank you so much.

Western earthquake support day 7. Today’s menu was pork with ginger mixed with vegetables and miso soup with tofu and mushrooms. Also we provided vegetables juice, snacks and instant coffee. 400 meals in total.

Right after we started providing, we felt a sudden shake and the sirens started ringing. Felt like seismic intensity of 5and felt long. We have these kinds of small aftershocks at least once a day. After providing, the head of the district came to appreciate what we do and at the end, he said “We are not giving up because of earthquake” We were all touched by what he said .

We will go back to Tokyo and then come back on the 17th to support. We are truly thankful to everyone who helped us with this project.
